Nick Abruzzese has been a solid piece for the Toronto Marlies recently, and now he's officially been placed on waivers, placing him in danger of being claimed. Over the past two seasons, Nick Abruzzese has been producing at a very high level in the AHL, and while Toronto have looked to find ways to get him into the NHL lineup, he just hasn't fit thus far. Now, with the team looking to reassign him to the Toronto Marlies, they've placed him on waivers, officially putting him at risk of being claimed by a rival team.

Given his production over the past two years (140 games, 32 goals, 100 points) in the AHL, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get claimed, with Maple Leafs analyst Steve Dangle noting that it's a real possibility.

One team especially to look out for is the Pittsburgh Penguins under GM Kyle Dubas who originally drafted Abruzzese in the fourth-round of the 2019 NHL Draft, and with their need for young forwards of the future, it's a play that would make sense. At 25-years of age, the New York native has played in just 2 NHL games, although he's been in a system with a loaded forward group, so perhaps an opportunity elsewhere could be exactly what his future NHL hopes need. Standing at 5-foot-11, Abruzzese is somewhat undersized, but has a fantastic shot as well as extensive experience in the NCAA and now the AHL, so if there's a team out there looking to give a fringe NHLer a real shot at the next level, don't be shocked to see him claimed.
