Two former Maple Leafs see their NHL dreams put on hold after being placed on waivers

This afternoon another set of waivers has taken place in the NHL and two former Toronto Maple Leafs players Kieffer Bellows and Brett Seney have been placed on waivers.

The end of the NHL preseason is the confirmation of the beginning of an NHL career for many players. It is also sometimes the temporary end to some players NHL dreams as they get sent to the minor leagues. Today former Toronto Maple Leafs players Kieffer Bellows and Brett Seney were both placed on waivers.

Brett Seney was in training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks. A former 6th-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft Brett Seney has been a fringe NHL player for the last few seasons. In the 2021-22 season, he got his opportunity with the Toronto Maple Leafs when he played 2 NHL games. At 28 years old he will likely head back to the AHL and look to impress and earn another call-up.

Kieffer Bellows is almost the opposite of Brett Seney when it comes to prestige on draft day. Kieffer Bellows was a 1st round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft selected by the New York Islanders. He was given several opportunities to succeed in the NHL first with the Islanders and then the Flyers. The 2023-24 season was the first where Kieffer Bellows exclusively played in the AHL while with the Toronto Marlies. During his AHL time, he tallied 49 points in 52 games. It seems like Kieffer Bellows could end up having a career as an in-between player at the top of the AHL but struggling to translate to the NHL.

Over the next 24 hours, each team in the NHL will have an opportunity to claim the players put on waivers. It will be interesting to see if either of these former Toronto Maple Leafs gets an NHL opportunity elsewhere this season.
