Elliotte Friedman was speaking on a 'Saturday Headlines' segment last night where he revealed the Canucks locker room rift took a turn for the worst in Florida.

The Vancouver Canucks reworked their roster Friday in a big overhaul.

By Friday evening, JT Miller, Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais, Erik Brannstrom, and two prospects were gone, and in a swap, Canucks acquired defenseman Marcus Pettersson, forwards Filip Chytil and Drew O'Connor, and prospect defenseman Victor Mancini.

The transaction had long been in the works. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, reporting for Hockey Night in Canada, said the Canucks tried to iron out the tension between Miller and Elias Pettersson early in the season, most likely in October after a poor 0-3 start.

«I heard that earlier in the year, the Canucks went on an east coast swing and it included going through Florida,» said Friedman. «I think at one point there, a small group of players got together and asked, 'Can you guys solve this?' Obviously, it stayed rocky.»

Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said tension increased in late November or early December, in his estimation.

«This was a conversation between myself and J.T. and his agent that started about two months ago,» said Allvin. «With his health and the environment we had, during the time and during the discussions leading up to yesterday, I felt that he probably needed a fresh start - where he was in his life and in his age and with his family, this was the best option for him and the Vancouver Canucks.»

Mental and physical health played a part for Miller. He sat out during the preseason and seemed to skate through an upper-body issue. But it was in his head, not in a physical sense, that change seemed to become a necessity.

In November, Miller took a leave of absence for personal reasons, according to reports, in an effort to retool mentally.

By mid-December, when rumblings about a feud with Pettersson grew louder, Miller acknowledged that he worried about "the noise between my ears" more than about the noise out in the real world.

The admission came in negotiations with his agent, and Allvin then acknowledged that Miller bore a lot in his head.

«We tried and we talked over the last two months to see if there was a common ground moving forward here in Vancouver but it made it clear to me that this was in the best interest for J.T. Miller and the Vancouver Canucks,» said Allvin to Sportsnet.

Hopefully, this fresh start for both Miller and the Canucks will lead both to have strong finishes to the season.
