It looks like Vancouver Canucks defenseman Nikita Zadorov is almost certain to be playing for a different team next season. Rumors have been swirling for weeks about the Canucks and Zadorov's camp struggling to agree on a new contract. Now, it appears Zadorov has turned down a late offer from the Canucks just before the official start of free agency on July 1st. According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the Canucks offered Zadorov a contract with a generous average annual value, but he said no. Nikita Zadorov will not be re-signing with the Canucks, GM Patrik Allvin announced Friday.

If we focus on Zadorov for a moment, it's believed the Canucks tried to keep him. They came in late and went as high as $5 million.

It seems Zadorov is either confident he can earn more on the open market or find a comparable offer from a team he'd prefer to play for. Dreger reports that more than 10 teams are interested in Zadorov, including the Maple Leafs, and GM Brad Treliving. However, their interest hinges on their cap situation. Losing Zadorov would be a blow to the Canucks, but seeing him sign with a bitter rival would sting even more.
