Earlier this week Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford spoke to the media and first floated the idea of Hughes being traded.
With the idea of Hughes being traded now on the table provided by Rutherford himself, there has been a lot of discussion regarding how likely that scenario actually is.
Of course, the Canucks are expected to trade one of if not both of their star forwards J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson and if the Canucks were to trade both could that then lead to a full rebuild.
This afternoon a report from Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star took an in-depth look at the circumstances under which the Canucks would be willing to trade Hughes.
In a new clip from Feschuk's appearance on an episode of 1st Up, the reporter discusses the situation in Vancouver and particularly Hughes' role in it.
According to Feschuk, the Canucks are not looking to move Hughes and it would take a massive offer even if the Canucks decide to rebuild to pull Hughes out of Vancouver.
Feschuk goes on to admit that Rutherford understands how good of a player Hughes is and how difficult it is to find defensemen of his caliber on the open market.
With Rutherford not looking to move on from Hughes it creates a different situation to the one they are currently in with Pettersson and Miller.
With the forwards, other teams know that the Canucks are desperate to move one of them meaning that other teams are trying to force the Canucks hand and get either player at a discount.
In the case of Hughes the Canucks, Rutherford, and Allvin would be able to sit back and wait for a truly incredible offer that they cannot say no to.
If they do not receive that kind of offer then Hughes will remain a Canuck even through a potential re-tool or rebuild.
