Alex Ovechkin left the ice during the Washington Capitals' informal practice after suffering from an injury.

Washington Capitals fans are holding their breath as a new report confirmed that Alex Ovechkin had to leave the team practice after only a few minutes.

Indeed, he retreated to the locker room visibly troubled with an injury:

This is concerning for multiple reasons. Ovechkin is 38, and injuries at that age can be harder to recover from.

Also, Ovi's quest to break Wayne Gretzky's goal record could face complications if he were to miss some time in the regular season. He only needs 42 goals to become the best goal-scorer in NHL history, and many believe he can achieve that feat before the end of his contract, in two seasons.

But the most important thing is that if Ovi were to miss some time, it could hurt the team's overall success this season.

Despite key additions to the roster in the summer, with Logan Thompson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Andrew Mangiapane and Jakob Chychrun, Ovi brings a steady offensive contribution, which will be missed if he miss games.

However, let's not start panicking just yet. No details on his health have been released, and the season starts only in a few weeks. Unless it's a major injury, it would be surprising to see him miss time.
