Santiago Sierra, one of Mexico's top hockey talents, recently found himself in hot water after a serious incident during a game in the country's premier hockey league.

Playing for the Teotihuacan Priests against the Olmec Stone Heads, the 36-year-old forward executed a dangerous slewfoot on Brandon Mendez, who didn't have the puck and was in the neutral zone. Mendez lay on the ice in pain, prompting a furious response from his teammates.

Intentional slewfoot lands Santiago Sierra a one year suspension

The Mexico Ice Hockey Federation and the Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey have now handed down a decision: Sierra is suspended for one year, effectively ending his 2024 season with the Priests. Puck Empire reported, "Santiago Sierra, one of Mexico's finest players, has been suspended for one year after a vicious slewfoot on an unsuspecting opponent."

Before the suspension, Sierra had an impressive start to the season with six points (five goals, one assist) in five games. This was his first professional season since 2019-20, which he also spent with the Priests. While the Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey's decision is viewed as justified, fans are left to wonder if the veteran player, who will be 37 when his suspension ends, will make a return to the ice.
