Stanley Cup champion Alex Chiasson is attempting a comeback with the Red Wings this year after missing the entirety of the past season.

The Detroit Red Wings announced their training camp roster today and it includes one familiar face we have not seen in awhile. In addition to all the regular names fans were expecting to see, they found former Red Wings forward Alex Chiasson.

Chiasson will be joining the team on a professional tryout after skipping the entire 2023-24 season. This is not the first time he has gone to camp under such circumstances, as he joined the 2017-18 Capitals after earning an NHL contract through a PTO that offseason. However, this is the first time he is attempting to come back to the NHL after missing an entire season. The 33-year-old, soon to be 34, most recently played in the NHL for Detroit in the 2022-23 season where he appeared in 20 games and recorded 9 points, including 6 goals.

Apparently, Chiasson left a memorable impression on Red Wings fans in his short stint with the team, as many have expressed joy that the team is giving him another chance. That being said, it will be a tough battle for him to earn a proper contract and make the team out of camp. There is a very real chance that does not happen and he ends up without a team for the season.

Chiasson has played in 651 regular-season NHL games split among seven teams. In those games he has 120 career goals and 113 assists for 223 points. He set career highs during the 2018-19 season when he recorded 22 goals and 38 points for the Edmonton Oilers. Does he have another NHL season in him? We will just have to wait and find out.
