In the Habs' rookie game against the Senators' rookies earlier today, defenseman Arber Xhekaj threw down the gloves for the first time in the tournament.

We knew Xhekaj was very strong and tough, but we didn't know he could fight to the point of making a 6'4", 216 lbs guy like Zachary Massicotte look bad.

Interviewed after the match, Xhekaj was willing to explain why this fight took place and the reason is distressing. It seems that a Senators player had some offensive comments that did not go over well with Xhekaj during the match:

« I looked at the guys on the bench and smiled, they were expecting it, so I started laughing too. I wanted to talk to them (the refs) because one of the guys on their side made some bad comments and I wasn't going to let him," said the 21-year-old from Ontario. He has no right to say things like that. I explained the situation and made sure they were aware of it. » - Arber Xhekaj

So the young man decided to take the law into his own hands:

« Xhekaj mentions that he spoke to the officials because someone from the Senators made offensive comments on the ice, and he "wasn't going to let it go.'' ».
