Last September, Nathan MacKinnon signed a deal paying him $12.6 million per year. He became the highest paid player in the NHL.

Next year will be the final year on Auston Matthews' current contract. Sportsnet reporter Nick Kypreos reports that Matthews would like to be the highest paid player in the NHL. Also according to Kypreos, the forward is reportedly asking for an eight-year, $15 million contract.

With players like Nylander, Marner, Rielly and Tavares, the Maple Leafs would not be able to offer Matthews such a contract. This demand could lead to Auston Matthews signing elsewhere. If the Maple Leafs want to keep him, they will have to make a trade to free up payroll space.

So far this season, the center has 40 points, including 17 goals, in 36 games.

Auston Matthews is looking for an 8 year, $15M AAV extension on his next contract. Per, Nick Kypreos.

Kypreos says the Leafs won't simply "hand it over" to Matthews, and contract negotiations will last a while. Kypreos also mentioned the longer the two sides go without an extension, the trade talks surrounding William Nylander will get stronger
