When the Leafs lost to the Florida Panthers in the second round last season Leafs fans were not very happy. Some fans went as far as to say the team needed to shake up the famous 'core four' of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares. After Kyle Dubas's media availability to end the season it sounded like that exact thing just might happen but he was promptly fired and replaced by Brad Treliving.
Treliving Chooses Not To Rock The Boat
It seems like Treliving's decision may have been made for him. Even before he accepted the job, president of hockey ops Brendan Shanahan assured Leafs fans that the 'core four' were not going anywhere. Shortly after bringing on Treliving the team announced a four-year contract extension for Auston Matthews, kicking in at the beginning of next season. Next on Treliving's to-do list? Re-sign William Nylander.

The Leafs Run It Back One More Time
Treliving made it clear that Matthews was the number one priority as soon as he got to Toronto. Although he has yet to come to an agreement with William Nylander, it does seem that Treliving and the Leafs are committed to re-signing him. Thus, a trade involving the star winger seems very unlikely at this point. Contract negotiations with Nylander are ongoing. In a recent interview with The Athletic's Jonas Siegel, Treliving was asked about the core four and what he had planned.

Treliving Keeps His Composure, Ignores Noise From Fans
Despite the fact thatmany Leafs fans were calling for big changes, Treliving stuck to his guns. He immediatly re-signed Auston Matthews and continues to work on re-signing Willian Nylander. He also brought in Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and Ryan Reaves for scoring depth while adding grit at the same time. With Nine players set to be UFAs at the end of this season, Treliving faces many big decisions.
