It's no secret that Kent Hughes is trying to trade the goaltender acquired in last month's three-team trade, Casey DeSmith. At the press conference following the sending of Jeff Petry to Detroit, Hughes remained a little vague, however, not fully revealing his plans for the goaltender. All we knew was that Laval was not an option. Add to that the two other hints that Samuel Montembeault and Jake Allen have received confirmation that they're staying in Montreal, and there's not much hope left for the newcomer. According to Sportsnet's Eric Engels, there's a much better chance he'll be traded before the start of the season. And that's what's interesting here. The fact that he's being traded isn't surprising, it's the fact that it's before the start of the season that Engels is talking about. Last week's meeting of the league's 32 general managers and head coaches in Chicago was a big help in this regard. This kind of meeting greatly activates transaction discussions, even if that's not the main purpose of the meeting.
