After the NHL made this massive announcement, David Pastrnak said he would boycott it in a statement.
NHL Announces 4 Nations Tournament Next Season in Place of World Cup
It's clear the NHL is putting more emphasis on trying to get its players back into international competition. The result is that the League is bringing back a modified World Cup of Hockey next year called the 4 Nations Tournament, which will see players from the USA, Canada, Finland, and Sweden compete in place of an NHL All-Star game. Here are the rules for the tournament as well as the announcement, as reported by Elliotte Friedman. No All-Star Game next season. Tournament rules:

The goal is, obviously, to get back to a World Cup format with more Countries being represented. However, this announcement has rubbed some players the wrong way, including David Pastrnak.
Pastrnak Will Not Watch 4 Nations Tournament After Being Snubbed
The quick turnaround for the tournament has left some Countries out of consideration for competition. This includes Pastrnak's home country of Czechia. He has said he is disappointed that he won't be able to participate, and won't watch as a result. It's a huge disappointment. Definitely not happy about it, Pastrnak said. I understand that it's a quick turnaround. It's next year. They probably didn't have much time to make it a bigger tournament. He added, But Czech isn't there. So it's always a lot of players left out, so I'm not gonna watch the tournament, to be honest. So just happy that the Olympics got accepted. Yeah, (it) definitely stings a little bit.

While it's hard not to agree with Pastrnak, I think the NHL does deserve some props for getting best-on-best back international play back after the long hiatus. Of course, this props is contingent on a full World Cup coming back as well, with the Czech included.
