The trade market is wide open and there's chatter of a head coach pushing to acquire a high-quality forward.
St. Louis Goes for Garland
Conor Garland's name has been buzzing in trade rumors since the offseason began. He's currently on a $4.95 million contract for the following three seasons which is a hefty price. The Vancouver Canucks want to give Garland a fresh start, and several teams are interested in him. One of those interested teams is the Montreal Canadiens, particularly their head coach, Martin St. Louis. There are whispers that St. Louis is really pushing for Garland. Eklund from HockeyBuzz.com had this to say: I know [the Canadiens] are currently talking to Vancouver about Connor Garland, and would love to make that deal if the Canucks were to take 50% of the salary. Currently I hear that Vancouver is stuck around 30 to 35% of the salary. This feels almost too close of a difference to imagine a deal couldn't get done. Marty St. Louis apparently is pushing hard for this one
Garland's Resemblance to St. Louis
Both St. Louis and Garland are smaller forwards, with Garland at 5'10 and 165 pounds, which is on the lighter side for NHL players. But like St. Louis, Garland plays with fearlessness, always finding his way to high-traffic areas to create scoring chances. Also, both players need the right system and linemates to excel. St. Louis started in Calgary, where he scored 20 points in 69 games before going to Tampa Bay, where he became a Hall of Famer. This doesn't mean Garland will be a superstar in Montreal, but he could see a boost in his production in St. Louis' system alongside players like Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. As of now, Garland has three points in 10 games this season. His slow start might force the Canucks hand and have them make a trade prematurely.
