It's an open secret in the National Hockey League that the Montreal Canadiens' defensive line as it currently stands cannot get the team into the playoffs, no matter how much the 12 forwards in front of them produce offensively. The Montreal Canadiens' general manager has been active since he took office and is well aware of this reality. Even if he wants to give his young defencemen a chance to earn a spot with the Sainte-Flanelle in October, he has to take a close look at the list of defencemen still available at the moment. According to internet user Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, three defencemen deserve special attention from Kent Hughes.

As you can see, he even refers to a certain P.K. Subban who played with the organization a few seasons ago. Subban had his best moments with the Montreal Canadiens, even winning the Norris Trophy, distinction given to the best defenseman of the Bettman circuit in regular season. As an UFA, it goes without saying that the defenceman was not attractive last season because of his $9 million per season contract. Needless to say, the option of sending him a professional tryout could result in an affordable contract that would fill a short-term need for the CH. Calvin De Haan would be one of the top three candidates. The 31-year-old left-handed defenceman could solve a problem over the next season or two. With four goals and four assists in 69 games with Chicago last year, the defenseman was once better offensively. However, his best is behind him. It could look like the use of Chris Wideman. Last but not least would be Sweden's Anton Stralman. The 36-year-old right-handed defenceman is hoping to sign another one or two season professional contract in the Bettman circuit before hanging up his skates. With a salary of $5.5 million last year, he had a decent season with the Arizona Coyotes. He scored eight goals with his excellent slap shot and recorded 23 points. Although his best is behind him, he has been known to be reliable defensively for much of his career and has been an exemplary teammate. It remains to be seen whether Kent Hughes will be tempted by any of these three players. We're talking about a professional tryout here, not an NHL contract.
