There have been several rumors surrounding Jets star Nikolaj Ehlers, and now a new source has him heading to the Montreal Canadiens this offseason. Summer 2025 will be one for NHL enthusiasts, and most particularly for the fan base of the Canadiens. With a salary cap increase, an abundance of superstar talent will become free agents. But, of course, if a fan of the Jets, then we're not sure that you will enjoy the most recent rumors surrounding Nikolaj Ehlers.

Some of these high-profile free agents include big performers such as Mikko Rantanen, Brad Marchand, Brock Boeser, and John Tavares, in case none of them re-sign with their respective teams. But a name is in circulation, and that name is that of Winnipeg Jets' winger Nikolaj Ehlers, with a career-best level of offensive performance. The Danish winger sits at 48 points in 47 games and could work for a move to Montreal. In years past, a strong source saw Ehlers' name in circulation regarding a move to the Canadiens, and grumblings have started about said move, per Eric Belanger. During an appearance on BPM Sports, this time it was Éric Bélanger who stated that he could definitely see Nikolaj Ehlers joining the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent next summer. If the price and term make sense, I think he could be a great addition to bring speed and grit. He's a player who could fit on a second or third line when the Canadiens reach their peak. He still has 501 points in 647 games and is heading toward his sixth season with 25 or more goals. I like that he has some grit, and I also like that he's a player you can use in all situations. - Eric Belanger

A player with a skill set that GM Kent Hughes could desire, he is a player who can skate in a top-six and produce offensively. Five times in eight years, Ehlers accumulated 25 markers in a single campaign, and at the current pace, 2024-2025 will become a sixth such achievement.
Ehlers could re-unite with Patrik Laine
With such a level of playmaking, and a sniper in Patrik Laine, with whom he played in Winnipeg, then under Martin St-Louis' tutelage, could form a deadly attack unit together.

Is Ehlers a player for whom a swap can occur to Montreal? Perhaps, but if you're a fan of the Jets, your first and greatest offseason priority for your GM, Kevin Cheveldayoff, is re-signing Ehlers.
