With the NHL salary cap barely rising in recent years, some teams are having a hard time building depth. That's the case with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are using almost 50% of their mass on four forwards. As we saw yesterday against the Canadiens, the Leafs finished the game with two forwards at the defenseman position. Sure, there were injuries during the game and it's pre-season, but it's still pretty unusual. What's even more unusual is to see a star forward like Mitch Marner at the defenseman position during the regular season. The team's head coach, Sheldon Keefe, has confirmed that Marner will play in some game situations at the blue line this season. Not just on the power play, but at five-on-five as well.

Keefe mentions that they are working on that and that Marner is doing drills with Morgan Rielly.
