For a few years now, the long-term injury list has been the subject of much criticism by NHL teams, especially in view of the playoffs.

If some NHL teams think that they can get past NHL management by bending the rules, by making transactions involving players on the long-term injured list who could play in the playoffs, it won't work anymore.

To address this situation directly, as TSN's Chris Johnston reports, the league has sent an internal message to all GMs in the league, warning them to be careful with this scheme this year.

To that end, the league said it will review all trades involving injured players with the goal of keeping them on the LTIR until the playoffs.

Are the Habs impacted by this new regulation?

Depending on the situation with Sean Monahan, it's clear that other teams may be very reluctant now to take a chance on the 29-year-old veteran, especially if he's not able to return by the end of the season.

Basically, the NHL is going to analyze all trades, with the goal of determining that a player who is traded, and who is on the long-term injured list, absolutely cannot return to play in the playoffs, in order for the trade to be approved.

In the event that Monahan is traded, it would mean that it will be proven that he can return by the end of the regular season.
