Today a new report has linked the Edmonton Oilers to former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman John Klingberg who has been negotiating a comeback in recent weeks.

Yesterday the Edmonton Oilers were listed as one of three potential teams hoping to sign John Klingberg in free agency and now have become the favorite to land him.

Last season, Klingberg struggled with several injuries while playing with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

These injuries cost him most of the 2023-24 season and significantly clouded his future in the NHL until this week.

Several reports over the last couple of days have confirmed that the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Ottawa Senators amongst other teams were the early contenders to potentially try and sign Klingberg.

Now this evening a new report from an Edmonton Oilers source has revealed that Edmonton is in fact the favorite to land the former all-star and could sign a deal in the coming days.

New report lists the Edmonton Oilers as the favorites to land John Klingberg

According to a post on X, from the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, the Oilers are expected to make a strong offer to Klingberg including the opportunity to be paired with Darnell Nurse and play significant power play minutes.

With this news, it now seems likely that the Edmonton Oilers will be making a big addition to their defensive unit before the trade deadline.

When healthy Klingberg is a fantastic offensive defenseman putting up anywhere from 40-65 points in a season.

Unfortunately, Klingberg has not been fully healthy in several years, and at 32 years old staying healthy is a challenge.

If Klingberg does sign with the Oilers finding ways to use his immense offensive talent while limiting his overall minutes will be paramount if the Oilers want to get the most out of him.

Over the next couple of days we will continue to watch this developing story to see if Klingberg ends up in Edmonton, back in Toronto, or somewhere else entirely.
