This evening a new report from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN has brought up the possibility that Connor McDavid might not re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers. Last week Connor McDavid and his wife Lauren made a post on social media regarding a new business venture in Edmonton. This announcement from the McDavid family made many fans feel that Connor's extension was essentially guaranteed. Pair that along with Leon Draisaitl re-signing and GM Stan Bowman committing to want to build around the duo for years to come.

All of these factors have led the McDavid extension story to kind of stay in the background as many have just assumed it was a matter of time before he officially signs a long-term deal. However, a new report from ESPN reporter and insider Greg Wyshynski has cast a shadow of doubt over McDavid's future in Edmonton.
ESPN report reveals Connor McDavid could be looking to leave Edmonton
According to Wyshynski the re-signing of Draisaitl which once looked like the guarantee for McDavid to re-sign might not be the case anymore going forward. I will make some informed speculation that the next couple of playoff seasons for the Oilers while McDavid is under contract are very very important. I do not necessarily believe that Leon signing is a harbinger for Connor re-signing. Wyshynski also points out that several teams in marquee markets are setting themselves up to potentially make a major run at signing McDavid if he makes it to free agency. You look at a team like Boston and New York and look at how those lineups and contracts are built in a couple of seasons. There might be some pretty interesting franchises that will be ready to make a run at the best player in the world if he doesn't have a contract in Edmonton. At the moment Wyshynski admits this is mostly speculation and trying to predict the future and ultimately he thinks McDavid will re-sign but the longer things go on the less likely that becomes.

However, the lack of an extension and big market teams beginning to circle and clear cap space has begun to spark the interest of reporters and insiders around the NHL world. As this situation continues to develop throughout this season and potentially into the offseason we will pass along the latest information.
