Ever since the lottery, we've heard that Kent Hughes is working hard to improve his draft position. The big problem is that this is an exceptional year in terms of talent, and getting a top-4 pick would be extremely expensive. Let's just say that offering Mike Hoffman or Christian Dvorak isn't going to help Hughes in his negotiations, although fans would love it. Former Canadiens scout Grant McCagg has come up with something different that sounds sweet to our ears. Why not take a step back in the standings by making a trade with the Capitals?

So McCagg would trade the 5th pick for the Caps' 8th and their 1st pick next year. The Capitals aren't what they were when they won the Stanley Cup. Their stars are aging and the window is pretty much closed in their case. So it wouldn't be surprising to see them get another top-10 pick in 2024, which would belong to the Habs if Matvei Michkov is still available at No. 5 and Kent Hughes agrees to the deal.
