Last summer witnessed a monumental trade between the Florida Panthers and the Calgary Flames, that saw stars like Jonathan Huberdeau and defenseman MacKenzie Weegar moving to the Flames, and Matthew Tkachuk joining the Panthers.

Following the exchange, all the involved players secured long-term contracts with their new teams.

Nonetheless, Huberdeau's inaugural season with the Flames turned out to be rather disappointing. Over the course of 79 games, he gathered just 55 points, setting a new negative NHL record with a 60-point drop in production, the highest in almost two decades.

This dip in performance was accentuated by his public disagreements with then-coach Darryl Sutter, and his frequent relegations in the lineup.

Huberdeau's Aims for Redemption and Leadership

Despite the hurdles in the previous season, Huberdeau is prepared for a fresh start under the guidance of new head coach, Ryan Huska.

Emphasizing his readiness to lead and foster a healthy environment for his younger teammates, Huberdeau conveyed his heightened comfort and determination to make a significant impact this season.

"I just feel like last year I didn't know what I was coming into, it was different for me," he said. "But it's nice to be finally settled, got a house here, I know what to expect. It's fun. It feels way more comfortable and I'm happy to be here. I can be a leader and that's one of my strengths", Huberdeau said.

"Last year was more tough for me to kind of do it, but this year, I think I'm going to be a leader on and off the ice as well. I want to show that and show my teammates what I can do."

Looking Ahead: Huberdeau's Take on Upcoming Contracts

With several Flames players nearing the end of their current contracts, Huberdeau expressed optimism about the team's prospects and voiced his desire to see the team retain its core group.

He underscored the collective focus on kickstarting the season positively, with hopes that the team's performance would encourage the players to extend their stay.

"Every team has guys who are on one-year contract and they have to decide what they're going to do," he said. "But at the end of the day, I think we're going to be a good team and they're going to see that. Hopefully, we want everyone to stay and we have a good fit and room here.

It's going to be exciting but it's not our decision. We're not going to think about that, but we're going to go in and try to have a good start to training camp»
