With the aim of improving his team for years to come, Kent Hughes is ready to make some important decisions. The attacking core is young and promising, but adding an established star to surround Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Kirby Dach seems to be a priority. Indeed, the Habs are brimming with quality prospects and will still have plenty of good choices for the next few years. If Hughes acquires a star player via transaction, he has the assets to avoid having to touch his core and the latitude to pay him, even overpay. Kent Hughes says the depth of prospects and the depth of draft picks in the organization open the door for the team to potentially 'overpay' for someone or something that better fits the Suzuki-Caufield-Dach window. We know that next summer, the Habs will have more than 20 million dollars in assets under the salary cap (with Price's contract on the LTIR). So far, since taking over, Hughes has worked with very little salary leeway, and has performed minor miracles. Imagine what he'll be able to do with a couple of tens of millions!

Kent Hughes says the prospect depth and draft pick depth in the organization opens the door for the team to potentially overpay for someone or something that fits better in the Suzuki-Caufield-Dach window.- Jared Book (@jaredbook) August 15, 2023
