New Pittsburgh General Manager Kyle Dubas wasted no time bringing former Toronto Maple Leafs to his new home in Pittsburgh. First he brought assistant GM Jason Spezza along, and then in free agency he scooped up forward Noel Acciari. Now he has brought in yet another ex-Leaf and this time it is a former top prospect.
Calder Cup Champion
The Penguins have signed Calder Cup winner and ex-Leaf Garret Sparks to an AHL contract. Dubas and Sparks are plenty familiar with each other, having spent 37 games at the NHL level with the Leafs across two seasons. There were high hopes for Sparks after he lead the AHL's Toronto Marlies to a Calder Cup in 2018, but when Sparks was handed the backup job to Frederik Anderson, the young netminder wilted under pressure. Sparks posted a 3.15 goals against average, and .902 save percentage and was replaced as backup when the Leafs brought in Michael Hutchinson.
Journeyman Netminder
It has been a tough road for Sparks since he left the Leafs, as he was traded to Vegas in July of 2019 and only appeared in one NHL game for them. Since then he has bounced around the AHL and ECHL in the Calgary and Los Angeles organizations, only appearing in two more NHL games with the Kings. Last year Sparks spent most of the year with ECHL Orlando and struggled to a .887 save percentage. This may end up being Sparks' last chance to play professional hockey, and Kyle Dubas is giving him one last shot to prove himself.
