The Montreal Canadiens are gearing up for a busy off-season, and it appears that team general manager Kent Hughes will be looking at a few potential free agents. According to journalist Marc-Antoine Godin, Hughes has five players on his radar this summer. The first is Colorado Avalanche forward Alex Newhook. Despite being one of the NHL's top prospects, Newhook has yet to break out with the Avalanche after recording 30 points (14 goals) in 82 games in his second season in 2020-21. It's possible that Hughes sees a lot of potential in Newhook and believes he could become a key figure for the Canadiens if he signs with Montreal this summer. The second player on Hughes' list is likely Alexis Lafreniere of the Rangers. The former first overall pick hasn't exactly lived up to expectations since entering the league, with 16 goals and 39 points in 81 games in his last season. He has also been blanked in seven playoff games so far, but a move to Montreal could help him reach his full potential. Hughes could also be interested in acquiring veteran Josh Bailey from the New York Islanders if he can get a deal done. Bailey is 33 years old and has 15 years of NHL experience, which could add invaluable experience to an already young team. He is currently under contract through 2024-25 where he will earn $5 million per season. Defensemen Sean Walker of the Los Angeles Kings and Alex Goligoski of the Arizona Coyotes round out Godin's roster and both could bring something different to the table. Walker, 28, offers size and mobility while Goligoski offers the experience of a power play specialist despite slowing down last year with only six points in 46 games due to age.

The first round of the playoffs has revealed some potential new trade targets for the Habs. It's unclear if any of these names will end up wearing a Canadiens jersey, but it's shaping up to be an interesting offseason for all Montreal fans.
