The NHL announced just before the season that pride tape is banned from all NHL related events including games and team practices. The league announced that players who violate the ban will be fined, but they did not define how large the fines would be. We may find out soon though as Travis Dermott used the rainbow-colored tape tonight.
Dermott Challenges NHL To Make A Move
While many players have already spoken out against the ban, Dermott is the first to openly defy it. It is as if he is challenging the league to actually punish him. After we saw the backlash the league received from the initial announcement, it will be interesting to see if the league goes through with their plan to fine the players. So far, the league has essentially announced that they are looking into the matter, but would not comment any further. The league made the following statement: We will review it in due course

Brian Burke Makes Bold Move
If the league does, in fact, decide to fine Dermott, one former NHL executive has his back. Brian Burke, a household name in the hockey world and long-time ally of the LGBTQ community, announced that he would pay any fines players receive for using the tape.

Burke congratulated Dermott on X today for making the bold decision to use the pride tape.

We will see if other players choose to defy the ban. It seems that many may be considering it but perhaps it will be a more common practice on pride night.
