The leagues upcoming season could be marked by a major change in the regular season format.

According to renowned journalist Larry Brooks, an imminent announcement is expected regarding negotiations between the NHL and the NHLPA for an increase in next season's salary cap.

This cap could rise from $82.5 million to $85 million, which would require an increase in funds placed in the trust (escrow) or the use of other methods to increase league revenues.

In response, the Players' Association would be prepared to increase the number of games from 82 to 84 and shorten training camps accordingly. This is a surprising proposal, given the intensity of the seasons and the resulting injuries.

While negotiations are underway, NHLPA head Marty Walsh will have to use financial arguments to convince his members to take a stand on this issue.

The direction these negotiations will take remains uncertain, but one thing's for sure: they're worth keeping a close eye on!
