The Habs were active in the off-season making three major trades, two of which become masterful moves by Kent Hughes.

During the draft, in a three-team deal, the Habs acquired Kirby Dach in return for Alexander Romanov and a couple of late draft picks.

Later in July, Hughes was able to trade Jeff Petry, along with Ryan Poehling, for Michael Matheson.

In the same month, the Habs GM got rid of Shea Weber's hefty contract for forward Evgenii Dadonov. Even though the Russian is off to a very difficult start in Montreal, the goal of the transaction was to get rid of Weber's contract and this was accomplished.

Finally, in a moment of urgency with the Calgary Flames, who wanted to sign free agent Nazem Kadri, the Tricolore pulled off a steal by acquiring Sean Monahan with a first round pick, for absolutely nothing.

Of the 32 players involved in a trade this summer who played at least one game in the NHL in 2022-23, Monahan is tied for 10th with Pavel Zacha and Jason Dickinson, while Kirby Dach is impressive at 3rd. Dadonov has no points so far and Matheson has yet to play a game in a Habs uniform this season.

Who would have thought that Monahan would have more points than Jonathan Huberdeau in this list?

Clearly, Kent Hughes is already a master at negotiating deals.
