Braydin Lewis, a 19-year-old whose fight against cancer inspired the local hockey community, sadly passed away late Saturday. The son of ex-Komets player Adam Lewis, Braydin was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, just last summer.

Adam Lewis is employed by Steel Dynamics Inc., while his wife, Kristen, serves as a deputy sheriff. To support Braydin's medical expenses, a Komets alumni game was organized on August 20 at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse. Hockey players from across North America, including Colin Chaulk, Sean Venedam, and Bobby Stewart, came together to participate. Braydin and his Metro Jets teammates, a junior-level team from Mount Clemens, Michigan, also took part in the game.

Former Komets players Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock, who manages the Icehouse, and Brandon Warner were instrumental in organizing the alumni match. The event raised over $26,000, with many praising Braydin for his widespread popularity in the hockey world and his unwavering courage in the face of cancer.

Braydin expressed his gratitude to The Journal Gazette before the game, saying, "This is awesome. I'm very, very, very thankful to be able to have something like this happen for me. And I'm very thankful for all the people around me who have helped, and that includes the hockey community and all the people involved with the game."

Earlier in the summer, following surgery to remove a 2-inch tumor from Braydin's right frontal lobe, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to aid the family, raising over $32,000.

"After his diagnosis last summer, he was determined to return for his third season," wrote the Jets on Sunday. "Not only did he return, but played while undergoing treatment. Lewey's strength and willingness was an inspiration to the team and he showed up to support his teammates at every opportunity."
