The Calgary Flames made a misstep today as they tried to sign one of their prospects to a standard entry-level contract.

Flames Forced To Give Prospect New Contract After NHL Rejects ELC

The team was attempting to sign NCAA free agent forward Sam Morton to a one-year entry-level deal. However, Morton is already over the age of 24, making the deal illegal. As a result, the NHL voided the contract when it was presented to the league.

Sam Morton's #Flames 1 year entry-level contract (ELC) has been rejected by the NHL central registry - he is ineligible for an ELC since his entry-level age is 25 (greater than 24)

The #Flames will have to submit a new non-ELC contract

However, the Flames remained interested in signing Morton, and as a result they agreed to a regular, one-year two-way deal later the same day. Morton is now officially listed as a non-roster player in the organization on capfriendly.

Welcome to the #CofRed, Sam!

We have signed college free agent centre Sam Morton to a one-year, two-way contract!

Morton is coming from Minnesota State University Mankato where he played in 37 games this year, potting 24 goals and 34 points. His contract does not kick in until next year. He will spend the remainder of the season with the Wranglers of the AHL on an amateur tryout per the Flames.

Morton's contract will begin with the 2024-25 season. He will be joining the
@AHLWranglers on an ATO for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign.
