Today Don Cherry fired up controversy once again as he has called out Hockey Canada for being too cheap to hire the best staff for major tournaments. Last week Don Cherry found himself in the news cycle for a controversial post on X and today he provided another controversial take this time regarding Hockey Canada. It is no secret that Team Canada at the World Junior Championships have struggled way more than anyone thought they would with a loss to Latvia and a close win against Germany.

In the aftermath of these frustrating performances, fans have been quick to judge the group, particularly calling out Team Canada head coach Dave Cameron for his questionable decisions.

With so much debate regarding who is at fault for the troubles Team Canada have had so far during the tournament Don Cherry decided to give his opinion on why things are not going well.
Don Cherry blasts Hockey Canada for being too cheap to hire the best
In a new episode of Don Cherry's Grapevine Podcast the legendary NHL head coach and broadcaster gave his two cents on why the Canadians are struggling. According to Cherry, the blame needs to be placed on Hockey Canada for not having a permanent staff in charge of major events like the World Juniors. Hockey (Canada) needs a full time coach, Cherry said Don and his son Tim Cherry went back and forth and revealed that they believe Hockey Canada is too cheap to hire full time staff. And a GM, that's for sure, right ... I just think Hockey Canada doesn't want to pay. Too cheap. Doesn't want to pay, then see the crowds ... You have Michael Misa, who was on pace to score 140 points in the OHL and has 30 goals and 30 games. I mean, he didn't even get invited to camp. He didn't even get invited to camp. Wasn't even invited. I would say they need a full-time coach and GM, no doubt about it. And you know what? Has to have total control Cherry a lifetime hockey coach and executive himself seems incredibly passionate about the idea that Hockey Canada has the ability to hire a head coach and GM to handle events like the World Juniors, World Championships, Olympics, and others but decides not to. This does bring up the fascinating case that at every other level of hockey, a head coach and a GM run the selection of a particular team for many years at a time. In international play, a GM gets one tournament before they are recycled but this doesn't have to be the case. There are plenty of bright hockey minds around the world and particularly in Canada who do not work in the NHL or for an organization at all. Giving those individuals a chance to represent their country and build a winning culture over years and not weeks or days feels like a much needed solution.
