Former Edmonton Oilers forward retires at the young age of 32

Tonight former Edmonton Oilers forward Riley Sheahan has retired after a 12-year career in the NHL at just age 32.

Reports this evening are confirming that former Edmonton Oiler Riley Sheahan is calling it a career after 12 NHL seasons. An Instagram post from Puck Empire has confirmed that Riley Sheahan is hanging up his skates.


Riley Sheahan began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings after being drafted 21st overall in the NHL Draft. After being drafted Riley Sheahan would spend two seasons at the University of Notre Dame. Eventually, he would sign with the Detroit Red Wings and stay there for 7 seasons. Riley Sheahan would join the powerhouse Pittsburgh Penguins for two seasons.

During his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Riley Sheahan would have the best stretch of his career. In 2 seasons with the Penguins Sheahan played 122 games and had 41 points. After a one-year stint with the Florida Panthers Riley Sheahan signed with the Edmonton Oilers.

Riley Sheahan plays a crucial role on the Edmonton Oilers in 2019-20

Riley Sheahan joined the Edmonton Oilers during the 2019-20 season. During his time in Edmonton, Sheahan played 66 games and had 15 points. Despite the lack of points, Riley Sheahan was a key veteran and defensive forward for a young Edmonton team still learning how to win. In the playoffs that season Riley Sheahan played another 4 games but did not record a point.

After playing with the Oilers Riley Sheahan would bounce between the Seattle Kraken and Buffalo Sabres for the remainder of his career. Last season he spent 12 games playing in the National League in Switzerland.
