Tonight former Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine has seen his career take another frustrating turn as Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis has benched him. Patrik Laine began his career with the Winnipeg Jets and looked to be a generational talent before struggling and ultimately being traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Since being sent away from Winnipeg Laine has had a turbulent career in the NHL having a pair of seasons in Columbus where he was near a point per game but other seasons where he was nonexistent. This summer Laine was traded to the Montreal Canadiens looking for another fresh start in a new city and looked to be on the right track playing well despite missing the beginning of the season due to injury.

Despite the run of success to begin his season Laine has now hit an all-time low with the Canadiens as he was benched tonight during the team's contest against the Anaheim Ducks.
Patrik Laine Benched By Martin St-Louis After Bad Stretch Of Plays
In the third period of tonight's game against the Ducks fans and reporters began to notice that Laine was not receiving any ice time. In the third period, Laine was given just one shift but remained on the end of the bench between the forwards and defensemen seemingly having been benched by St-Louis.

After the game St-Louis spoke to the media and was asked about Laine and whether it was an injury or coach's decision that kept him from taking the ice again in the third period. St-Louis confirmed that he and his staff felt the team had a better chance without Laine in the lineup after he had a difficult time in the first two periods of the game.

Unfortunately, despite his great statistical start to his tenure with the Montreal Canadiens, it seems Laine might be back in the same situations he has been in during his two previous stops. Laine has an incredible knack for being able to score goals that even most other NHL players cannot score on a regular basis. However, his overall game has failed to translate beyond the goal scoring in several different tenures now and it is preventing him from being a consistent and reliable player for contending teams. It will be interesting to see if this benching by St-Louis will be a wake-up call for Laine and a turning point to get back on track or just a sign of what is to come in the future.
