Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes broke his silence and opened up on how he truly felt about former teammate JT Miller following his trade.

The Vancouver Canucks finally put weeks of speculation to rest by dealing JT Miller off to the New York Rangers on Friday night.

Even with the move being publicly known for weeks, it wasn't any easier on Canucks captain Quinn Hughes.

Quinn Hughes believes JT Miller is happy about his fresh start

He will see Miller next week at the 4 Nations Face-Off but thinks his good buddy is looking forward to his fresh start in New York.

"You know to see him go, he's a heck of a hockey player and I enjoyed playing with him for the six I had," Hughes told Sportsnet's Dan Murphy after the Canucks' 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Friday. "Obviously wish him the best... Right now, it doesn't even really seem real, but next couple weeks, I'm sure it will sink in a little bit."

"I think there's just been a lot of noise, for Millsy, too, it's been a lot on him," Hughes said. "I think he's looking forward to a fresh start, but we're obviously going to miss him here, he played a lot of good hockey for us."

It has been an ongoing issue between Miller and Elias Pettersson and has affected the dynamic in the locker room on and off the ice.

A trade felt like a foregone conclusion after general manager Patrik Allvin and team president Jim Rutherford admitted earlier in the week that things weren't quite right.

The 31-year-old Miller broke into the NHL with the Rangers before being dealt to Tampa Bay in 2018. He signed with Vancouver in 2019, and this was his sixth full season with the club.

Coming off a career-high 103-point season in 2023-24, he struggled to start 2024-25 with 16 points in 17 games prior to taking his 10-game leave of absence.

In return for Miller, the Canucks got Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a conditional first-round pick back for Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom.

After losing to the Stars on Friday, Vancouver is still a point behind Calgary for the last wild-card position in the West.
