Tonight a new report has surfaced that talks about the Edmonton Oilers plans heading into the trade deadline. The insider source believes the Oilers have had a change of heart when it comes to goaltending.

Oilers Have Changed Course With Their Goaltending Plan

All season the discourse around the Edmonton Oilers has been around their inability to keep the puck out of the net. Many believe this problem is what led to former head coach Jay Woodcroft being fired.

With this in mind, many believed the Oilers would look to address this need at the deadline. However, a new report has indicated that the Oilers have changed their goaltending trade plans.

"I get different opinions on this, but I'm not convinced you guys are going to add a goalie." - Elliotte Friedman

Now often when Elliotte Friedman is given information it tends to be correct. This means the Oilers likely won't trade for a goalie but is that the right move?

Should the Edmonton Oilers Be Targeting A Goalie At The Trade Deadline?

With this lack of a plan to address goaltending now all but confirmed the focus shifts to who the Oilers have and whether it is enough.

The starter for the Edmonton Oilers for most of this season has been Stuart Skinner. With Skinner, the Oilers have seen a microcosm of their goaltending issues. For stretches, Skinner has been good and for other stretches, he has been downright awful with his last 5-10 games being in the awful category.

His backup Calvin Pickard was never even expected to be in the NHL this season. In his 10 appearances in the NHL this season he has been fine. However, he cannot be trusted with the playoff hopes of a team like the Oilers.

Then finally there is Jack Campbell. The presumed starter at the beginning of the year had an atrocious five-game run and was placed on waivers. Many had hoped a short stint in the AHL would solve things but he has been bad there as well. This likely means he will not end up back in the NHL.

With these options for the Oilers a playoff run starts to not look optimistic. If the Oilers do not make a move they could greatly risk some of the best years of their star-studded core.
