The Toronto Maple Leafs are not a particularly deep team. They rely on their top players to score in order to win. As such, today's injury news will be extra devastating.

Toronto Maple Leafs Superstar Out With Ankle Sprain

Leafs reporter David Alter confirmed this evening that Mitch Marner has a high-ankle sprain. The star winger has been out of the lineup for a week already as his last game came on the 7th, when he scored the team's only goal in a 4-1 loss to Boston.

Woll Injury Sets Guideline For Marner Return Date?

Marner is not the first Leaf to deal with this particular injury this season. Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll missed extended time with a high-ankle sprain spanning from late 2023 well into 2024. In Woll's case, he suffered the injury on December 7th and did not return to play another game until February 29th, nearly three whole months later.

Sheldon Keefe: «He's still a ways away»

That being said, Marner is currently listed as day-to-day. According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the Leafs believe Marner's injury is far less problematic than Woll's was, making a path to his return much easier and quicker.

"Normally that's problematic. The Toronto Maple Leafs believe it's very minor. They got a second opinion to make sure it's being managed correctly. He hasn't been on the ice this week so I don't suspect he'll be ready to go Saturday. But it's possible. They're not ruling him out. But they do want to make sure that they do take the time necessary to make sure that he gets the treatment that he needs."

Hopefully, Dreger is correct and Marner is able to return to the Leafs shortly. Should he be out the same amount of time as Woll was, the Leafs could be doomed in the playoffs.
