Mark Messier is one of the more famous players to play in the NHL and recently he shared some his wisdom from his playing days following the disappointing end tot he season for the Edmonton Oilers. Naturally, Messier wanted to talk about the Oilers, as they were his home for a very long time. Not only is he an Edmonton native, but he spent nearly half of his lengthy NHL career playing for the team. Given how close the current iteration of the Oilers are to a championship, it inspired Messier to speak about the pressures that come with playing for an exceptionally good team. He noted that not everyone in the league is cut out for that kind of pressure. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. That's just part of professional hockey when you're trying to get to the elite level and not everybody is made for it. A lot of players can play in the league but not everyone can play on a team that is expected to win. A lot can be drawn from this statement. Many fans could look at a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs and wonder if the players on that team simply are not capable of performing under pressure considering their playoffs history. However, this was not the only subject Messier touched on. He also talked about his early days if his career, where he played in the WHA, which he described like the wild west of hockey. The WHA was a different jungle of beasts. Mark Messier joined the pod to discuss.

He also shared several stories about Wayne Gretzky. Of course, most hockey fans would be interested in anything involving the great one. However, Messier spent a significant period of time talking about what it was like to win a Stanley Cup after the Oilers traded Gretzky to the LA Kings. «That Cup was just a testimony to experience, grit, determination, and just frickin' grizzled. We just mucked it up.» Mark Messier explained what it was like winning a Cup in Edmonton without The Great One.

Finally, Messier touched on perhaps what is the most famous moment of his career, when he guaranteed the Rangers would win game six to force a game seven in the Stanley Cup finals of 1994. The rest is history. Mark Messier walked us through the most famous guarantee in hockey history.
