In honor of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau following their tragic passing, the NHL has announced that all teams will wear decals on their helmets.

To start the 2024-25 season, all 32 NHL teams will wear a special helmet decal in memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. It is the least that could be done to honor the brothers and their memory toward the hockey fraternity.

Anchored by a large, centered "G," the decal design features the jersey numbers the brothers wore throughout their career. Simple yet striking, the tribute to the work both accomplished on and off the ice is fitting.

Johnny and Matthew have sadly died as the result of a biking accident in New Jersey this past August. They were struck down by a vehicle, and the driver, Sean M. Higgins, has since been charged with two counts of death by auto. Prosecutors said Higgins had a blood-alcohol level of .087, just over the legal limit.

Johnny Gaudreau was set to begin his third season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and 11th overall in the NHL after having spent much of his career with the Calgary Flames. His brother Matthew was no stranger to the scene either, having played collegiately at Boston College before later coaching at Gloucester Catholic, his high school alma mater.

"The bond that Matt and John shared is something that, unless you knew them personally, even the most perfect words, pictures, or videos cannot adequately describe it," she said. "They were attached at the hip. They slept in the same room up until college, and neither of them ever wanted that to change. To know both of them was to truly love them. It was impossible not to fall in love with them. Meredith said it best: You do not hear one name without the other. They were so extremely proud of each other."

The NHL season starts on October 8, but the Gaudreau tribute decals will remain on the players' helmets until October 24, when the last team has its home opener. But the Columbus Blue Jackets did one better, promising to wear the decal all season long so that Johnny and Matthew's memory is always with them.
