NHL on ESPN analyst PK Subban shared a video today discussing the hit on Patrik Laine where he let Cedric Pare have it.

Laine left yesterday's pre-season game against the Toronto Maple Leafs after taking a hit from Cedric Pare. The play did not result in any penalties or supplementary discipline for the Marlies forward, but it did appear to have a huge impact on the newest Canadien. Of course, Laine was just acquired by the Canadiens in a trade with the Blue Jackets last month. While it was generally considered to be a low-risk move, the worst-case scenario appears to have played out as Laine could miss the entire season. At this point though, the Habs have not officially updated us on his status.

Regardless, PK Subban saw enough to comment himself. He posted a video on X today, blasting the Leafs forward for the dirty and dangerous hit on Laine. Specifically, he called it a matter of respect, indicating that Pare did not show any for his fellow player in Laine. He added, "There can't be any cheap shots on our superstars."

The play itself, as well as Subban's comments drew a lot of attention from fans around the league. As one might expect, Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj went after Pare after the play, and the Leafs forward refused to fight back. Many fans have called him out for being a coward because of this.

Other fans simply called out the hit, calling it dangerous. Many pointed to how damaging knee injuries can be, especially for hockey players where these kinds of injuries are more common than we would like.

Additionally, many fans were surprised that there was no supplementary discipline for Pare. Many were expecting a suspension for the hit, but instead he is allowed to continue playing. With that being said, Habs fans will rest easy knowing that he will not make the Leafs roster.

Hopefully Laine's injury was not as bad as it appeared at first. We are still waiting for an update from the team. We will just have to wait and see when we can expect to see him return to the lineup, if he even gets that chance this season.
