The NHL is apparently considering changing the rules for often-controversial delay of game penalties. This would give coaches more power as these would become challengeable plays. Fans of the sport should welcome this change as delay of game penalties have often been seen as something that should be reviewable. However, some have though that pucks going out of play should not be penalties at all. Those that support this idea might be disappointed to hear this news.
NHL General Managers Agree To Rules Change For Certain Penalties
Every year, all 32 NHL general managers get together for a meeting to discuss the status of the league. These meetings are designed to improve the product on the ice as well as make the NHL a better league. As a result, these meetings often result in rules changes. This year, it seems that the meeting has been a productive one as the league is now considering making one serious rule change. NHL insider Darren Dreger revealed today that the league will be making puck-over-glass penalties challengeable as well as certain high stick penalties. Rule tweaks in the NHL. Puck over glass will eventually be a Coaches Challenge to remove penalty as will «Friendly Fire» high stick penalties. Other small changes also expected. These are recommendations that go to the competition committee and then to board for final approval.

This news was first reported live on air when TSN did a segment covering the general manager's meeting this afternoon. Apparently, this meeting has been particularly productive as there have been more proposed rules changes since the 2004 lockout. Hopefully this change will lead to better officiating in the NHL. After all the league has had more than its fair share of controversies both on and off the ice.As fans of the sport we should all be striving for a league with less drama caused by questionable enforcement of the rules.
