Capitals veteran winger Tom Wilson received his sixth career suspension from the NHL Department of Player Safety today. The decision came after the forward made a violent high-stick on Toronto Maple Leafs forward Noah Gregor.

Maple Leafs forward stunned after stick to the face from Wilson

The first year Leaf was battling for the puck in the corner when he was suddenly wacked in the face by Tom Wilson's stick. The play was somewhat shocking for how violent and intentional it appeared to be.

oh wow

high-sticking penalty on Wilson

The play met mixed response online, but Leafs fans seemed rather unanimous in that the play deserved more than just a double minor.

Throw the book at Wilson, right?

Wilson receives another lengthy suspension after in-person hearing

Following the game, the NHL made a rare decision, offering Tom Wilson an in-person hearing with the Department of Player Safety. This is notable as it means the league has the ability to suspend Wilson for more than five games. Ultimately, the league decided that this type of suspension was appropriate, given his history.

Its not the first time Wilson has had such a suspension. He's had three suspensions longer than five games, his most recent coming after he boarded Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo, resulting in a seven-game suspension.
