Big news for Toronto Maple Leafs Nation as Marshall Rifai and Matt Murray hit waivers today. Rifai, a 26-year-old defenseman, didn't crack the opening night lineup, but he's turned heads with his play and effort during camp. He's had an unconventional journey, opting to play for Hotchkiss School and later Harvard instead of major junior hockey.

After winning an ECAC championship, Rifai had NHL interest but chose an AHL deal with the Marlies. Now signed to a two-year, $775,000 contract, if unclaimed, he'll head back to the Marlies.

Meanwhile, Matt Murray is working his way back from hip surgery. The 30-year-old Stanley Cup champ with the Pittsburgh Penguins posted decent numbers with the Leafs last season but is now their third goalie.

It's second time Murray was placed on waivers since he left Pittsburgh, as it also happened with the Ottawa Senators in 2021.

With a one-year contract at $875,000, Murray is set to start the season in the Marlies' crease. While it can be risky to put a goalie on waivers, Toronto can't afford to carry three netminders, so Murray will be the first call if needed for a backup role.
