This evening a new report has been provided giving an update on the case against Sean Higgins who is alleged to have caused the passing of the Gaudreau brothers. Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau sadly passed away over the summer after they were tragically struck by an allegedly drunk driver named Sean Higgins. The tragic event sent the entire hockey world into a state of shock and grief for the next several months.

On the legal side of things, Sean Higgins was arrested and taken to jail the next day and was not given bail while he awaited the next steps heading to a potential trial. Since being processed and placed in jail, there have been a few hearings, but until today, there have been no real developments in the process. Since being arrested it has come to light that on the night of the accident, Sean Higgins admitted to drinking six beers before getting behind the wheel of a car. At the time of the accident, Sean Higgins was allegedly intoxicated and on the phone with a friend discussing an argument he had with his mother earlier that day. While driving Sean Higgins became impatient with other drivers in front of him and swerved to pass them on the shoulder at which point he struck the Gaudreau brothers. To this point, that was all we knew about what had happened to lead to the passing of the Gaudreau brothers. This afternoon that changed slightly as Sean Higgins was seen in the courtroom for the first time as the prosecution
Sean Higgins faces the Gaudreau family in court
Today Sean Higgins was back in court for yet another pre-trial hearing but this time he was in person for the first time. In all of the other hearings, Sean Higgins had been present remotely through a video call but today that changed. As a result, this was also the first time that the Gaudreau family was in the same room as the person who allegedly caused the passing of Johnny and Matthew. According to those who were there in person the Gaudreau family did not speak during the proceedings to this point no plea deal has been offered to the defendant.

Reports indicate that there has been a 30-day delay put in place on the next steps of the process while the New Jersey State Police continue the discovery process.

As this process continues to play out we send out our continued condolences to the Gaudreau family during what must be an unimaginably difficult time. If more updates are provided on the fate of the defendant and the next steps in the legal process we will pass them along to you.
