Luke Richardson was fired yesterday as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, and today four front-runners were mentioned including a very controversial one.

First-year assistant and NHL rookie interim head coach Anders Sorensen, formerly of the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, joins the team for his first year behind the bench with the Blackhawks under GM Kyle Davidson following Luke Richardson's firing.

Among targets for that position include the least experienced than any of them, considering he was the first Swedish-born coach in NHL history, and for good reason.

With the Blackhawks at the bottom of the league standings, the general manager seems ready to take his time with Anders Sorensen.

For one thing, until at least the trade deadline, this current season's roster stability has extended the period wherein he can prove himself.

Here are three possible replacements that have come to the forefront of possibly taking over as Blackhawks head coach if the team decides not to stick with Sorensen.

Jay Woodcroft

Former Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft has been the popular alternative. The success he's had with younger stars with the Oilers and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, too, has made him very attractive to Chicago.

He took Edmonton all the way to the conference finals in his first season. Without a doubt, in case something doesn't work out with Sorensen, he will be among the favorites due to his merits.

Bruce Boudreau

Another good fit could be veteran coach Bruce Boudreau, who enjoys teaching and leading.

The general consensus when Bruce Boudreau parted with the Vancouver Canucks was that he got a raw deal. He might bring that experience this rebuilding team needs.

Joel Quenneville

The most polarizing decision involves the potential re-addition of three-time Stanley Cup-winning coach Joel Quenneville with the Chicago team.

Being reinstated recently by the NHL, his hire would be shrouded in controversy because of his inclusion in the Kyle Beach scandal.

A reunion isn't impossible, as seen by coaches such as Lindy Ruff being re-added to teams they have coached before, making room for a Joel Quenneville return. And all eyes, for now, are on Sorensen as he comes under evaluation from Davidson.

If Sorensen were to underperform, Davidson seemed ready with a shortlist of replacements to try and take the franchise ahead.
