Last night moments before the puck drop for the Colorado Avalanche it was announced Valeri Nichushkin was being suspended. Today his teammate Jack Johnson spoke about the suspension.

Several reports confirmed last night that Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin had been suspended for 6 months. The suspension comes after multiple violations that have occurred while he has been a part of the NHL's Player Assistance Program.

NHL & NHLPA announced Colorado's Valeri Nichushkin is now in Stage 3 of the Player Assistance Program.

As a result, Nichushkin will be suspended without pay for a minimum of six months, then can apply for reinstatement.

After the Avs 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars several players faced the media. One such player was Jack Johnson who was asked about Valeri Nichushkin and the situation as a whole.

#Avs Jack Johnson on Val Nichushkin:

«He made his decisions. That's all I'm going to say on that. He made his decisions.»

Nichushkin's nameplate has already been replaced in the Avs locker room.

This response from Jack Johnson was notably more cold and matter of fact than some of his teammates. Others including Cale Makar showed more compassion for their struggling teammate.

"I want him to be happy and I want him to be content in his life, whether that is with our team or not with our team."

Both statements are a valid reaction to the situation. In Jack Johnson's case, he is frustrated at Valeri Nichushkin for putting himself before the team and not being responsible. Cale Makar decided to focus more on the well-being of Valeri Nichushkin and bypass the hockey ramifications.

Now the Colorado Avalanche will once again be without one of their top forwards for the remainder of the playoffs due to substance issues. With a few more days to prepare for the next game, it will be interesting to see if they can overcome this adversity.
