When Don Waddell was asked about his team's culture, he proceeded to rip into them and say how disappointed he's been with the attitudes of certain players. The Columbus Blue Jackets are in the midst of a rebuild, having missed the playoffs since 2020. Newly appointed general manager Don Waddell understands that the process will be gradual, but he is determined to shift the culture in Columbus and end the cycle of losing. The one thing is, I'm not saying it was everybody, but losing was acceptable (here) and losing is not acceptable, he said, according to NHL.com's Dave McCarthy. We have a ways to go building this, but our goal every year should be to win the Stanley Cup, not just to win some games. It's a mindset. I believe what happened last year, talking to everybody, things didn't go well and they had a lot of injuries at the beginning of the year and fell out of the race pretty quick [and] they just kind of played out the season. And we have to change that.

Last season, the Columbus Blue Jackets finished among the league's bottom five with a 27-43-12 record. While injuries played a significant role in their struggles, Don Waddell refuses to use them as an excuse for the team's subpar performance. (They) fell out of the race pretty quick (and) they just kind of played out the season, he said. He previously transformed the Carolina Hurricanes into a dominant force in the Metro division, and there's reason to believe he can replicate that success in Columbus over time.
