Leon Draisaitl's extension has been a huge talking point for Oilers fans this off-season, and with training camp and his return approaching, all signs are pointing to a deal being done before the 2024/25 campaign officially kicks off. Now, new General Manager Stan Bowman has addressed the situation, and it should be very comforting to those Oilers fans still worried that No. 29 may be heading to free agency in 2025. <q>I had a good conversation (with Liut), and we're starting things off, and the timing on that will be what it will be, the executive told NHL.com's Derek Van Diest on Monday. The 28-year old superstar is expected to become one of, if not the highest paid players in the NHL when his newest deal hits, with all expectations being that the yearly value will come in at $13 million and above. Draisaitl comes into negotiations with five out of his last six seasons ending in 100 points or more, and given how important he is to a team contending for the Stanley Cup, getting a deal done makes sense for both parties. With Connor McDavid's extension set for the summer of 2026 (eligible for a new deal next off-season), locking in his running mate would be the most ideal situation, and unless something drastic changes, this should be done before the 2024/25 season begins.
