The Edmonton Oilers are set to take on the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow night, and the team has unveiled a new logo that will be used to celebrate Black History. Rogers Place is hosting a unique evening of hockey on Friday night to recognize Black History Month. The Oilers, in the 'Celebrating Black Excellence' game, will attempt to make it three in a row as they battle the Colorado Avalanche. Accomplishments of Black community leaders are to be highlighted throughout the evening and will include the singing of the national anthem by Edmonton singer and actress Karella Cummings. «The Black community has played such a positive role in the Oilers organization and across Oil Country,» said OEG executive vice-president Tim Shipton in a Thursday news release. «We are looking forward to recognizing and celebrating players, artists, performers and other community leaders to help inspire the next generation of Black youth in Oil Country - while continuing to reinforce that hockey is for everyone,» he said. Fans entering Ford Hall can be impressed by an eye-catching logo, a hand-stitched Oilers Black Excellence tapestry, 8-by-10 feet in size, crafted by Edmonton artist AJA Louden.

The tapestry was gifted to former Oiler Grant Fuhr
The tapestry was personally given to Grant Fuhr, the legendary goaltender who became the first Black player to have his name etched on the Stanley Cup five times during the Oilers Dynasty and later earned a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. «The tapestry I crafted for the Oilers Black Excellence Celebration is a tribute to the ongoing story of Black players breaking ground in hockey,» said Louden. «Representation helps empower communities. Both sport and art can bring us closer together.»

Special-edition Oilers Black Excellence merchandise is available in-store and online, with a portion of sales going towards the Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots, a local non-profit chosen by Louden. This event comes a week after the Lunar New Year celebration, and the final cultural theme night of the season, the South Asian Celebration game, is set for March 4.
