The Edmonton Oilers lost two of their brightest young stars Dylan Holloway and Raphael Lavoie before this season began and now those losses are coming back to haunt them.

This offseason the Edmonton Oilers were looking to add around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to help the team get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Oilers decided to add veterans like Jeff Skinner but in the process greatly limited their salary cap space.

As a result of this lack of salary cap space, the Edmonton Oilers were unable to sign Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg before free agency began and had to offer them a qualifying offer. Eventually, the St. Louis Blues came in and offered both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg massive contracts and ripped them away from the Oilers.

This was a huge blow to the Edmonton Oilers depth on their roster. Dylan Holloway was expected to step into the third-line center role after the Oilers traded away Ryan McLeod to the Buffalo Sabres. Instead, the Oilers were left stranded.

On top of losing both of these young forwards the Edmonton Oilers also put former top prospect Raphael Lavoie on waivers. The 2019 second-round pick put up 50 points in the AHL and was expected to challenge for a roster spot in Edmonton. Instead, he was placed on waivers and eventually claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights.

All of these losses left the Edmonton Oilers without any NHL ready players who could move up in the lineup if injuries occurred. Now Connor McDavid has gone down with an unfortunate lower-body injury and the Oilers have now been forced to call-up players who likely will not play a big role in the lineup for the team.

Edmonton Oilers forced to call-up two AHL veterans after Connor McDavid injury

Last night during the Edmonton Oilers game against the Columbus Blue Jackets Connor McDavid went out with a lower-body injury. The injury to McDavid was serious enough that he will miss several games.

As a result of the devastating injury the Edmonton Oilers are now forced to call up a pair of forwards from the AHL to insert into the lineup. According to reports they will be calling up Drake Caggiula and Noah Philp.

Drake Caggiula Edmonton Oilers fans should be familiar with as he spent several years with the team including making his debut in Edmonton. Now at 30 years old Drake Caggiula is one of those players who is a star in the AHL but just can't seem to crack an NHL lineup on a nightly basis.

Noah Philp on the other hand earns his first call-up to the NHL today. The 26-year-old forward signed with the Edmonton Oilers organization in 2022 after a career in USports the Canadian college league with the University of Alberta. To this point in his career, Noah Philp has been just an average AHL player but impressed during training camp and preseason with the Edmonton Oilers.

While both of these players can likely fill a bottom-line role in Edmonton and not look out of place, the Oilers could've had much better options if they hadn't mismanaged their assets. The current front office group decided to go with a more veteran forward corps, and virtually all of them are underperforming while players like Dylan Holloway are making an impact on a Western Conference rival.

NHL teams never like to assume their star players will get injured or perform poorly. However, the Edmonton Oilers' lack of asset management has landed them in an awful situation. If Connor McDavid misses significant time the Oilers could find themselves struggling to stay in the playoff race all because of the front office's inability to manage their assets.
