The Edmonton Oilers are set to play Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers and if they win one of their veterans could miss out on having his name on the Stanley Cup. Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner has had multiple stops with the Edmonton Oilers and seen the franchise at its highs and lows. Now with the team at an all-time high Sam Gagner finds himself on the outside looking in. He has been a scratch for the entire playoffs to this point. I know he hasn't played yet but from what they show in the playoff passes, he's right there with everyone. Hugging everyone, giving everyone pep talks and being their biggest cheerleader. He's Papa Oiler and he deserves the cup after all he's been through

Despite not playing Sam Gagner has still been one of the most crucial leaders in the Edmonton Oilers locker room. This was most evident after one game where Sam Gagner can be seen going around to his teammates and interacting after a game he did not get to play in.

Despite this leadership the fact still remains that Sam Gagner has not played in a game. As a result he could be left off the Stanley Cup if the Edmonton Oilers win due to a rule put in place by the NHL. ENGRAVING ELIGIBILITY: A player is required to have appeared in at least 41 regular-season games with a team, or one Stanley Cup Final game, to be eligible to have his name engraved on the trophy. Having played in just 28 regular season games and no Stanley Cup Final games Sam Gagner would miss the eligibility to see his name on the Stanley Cup. All hope is not lost as a team can petition to get a player's name on the Stanley Cup. This would likely be the case for Sam Gagner. As the Stanley Cup Finals play out we will all have to wait and see if Sam Gagner gets into a Stanley Cup Finals game to officially secure his eligibility.
